The best way to kill tree roots depends on what you are trying to accomplish and if you want to use chemical or environmentally friendly methods. The size, type, and age of the tree and the protection of surrounding vegetation all need to be taken into account.
If you are only trying to remove some roots, installing a root barrier may be possible, or cutting off and removing the unwanted roots manually.
If you are trying to remove an entire root system, it is best to engage an expert arborist. Even the more environmentally safe methods, such as Epsom salts, can affect the surrounding area if not done correctly.
Whether your insurance company will cover the cost of fallen tree removal depends on your homeowner policy. Interestingly, the answer to when insurance will pay can also change quite a bit based on the cause of the tree falling and where it falls.
Homeowner's insurance will not usually cover preventative tree removal, and your insurance company may refuse to pay for damage caused by a tree that falls due to preventable damage. For example, if a tree falls on your house, and the insurance company decides you should have known it was rotten or unstable, your insurance may not cover the resulting damage and tree removal.
It depends. If the tree is endangering your roof, has pests, or if the roots are upsetting your foundation, you may want to consider removing it. A certified arborist can help you determine whether to save the tree or to remove it.
Municipalities require arborist reports for several reasons:
Tree cutting, trimming, and pruning are three distinct practices, each serving different purposes in the care and maintenance of trees.
**Tree Cutting** typically refers to the complete removal of a tree. This action is usually taken for safety reasons, such as when a tree is dead, diseased, or poses a hazard to structures, people, or surrounding plants. Cutting a tree can also be part of land clearing for construction or landscape alteration.
**Tree Trimming** focuses on selectively removing branches to enhance the tree's aesthetic appearance and health. Trimming is often done to shape a tree, remove overgrown branches that may be blocking sunlight or obstructing views, and reduce the risk of damage during storms by removing potentially weak branches.
**Tree Pruning**, while similar to trimming, has a more specific goal of promoting the tree's health and structural integrity. Pruning involves removing dead, diseased, or weak limbs to prevent the spread of decay, encourage growth, and improve fruit production in fruit-bearing trees. It's a critical maintenance task that can influence a tree's future shape and strength.
While all three practices involve cutting parts of a tree, the intention and techniques differ significantly. Proper execution of these tasks is crucial for the safety of the tree and its surrounding environment, often requiring knowledge of tree biology and the use of specialized equipment.
